September 26, 1999 - How many crews?
It's been a busy & stupid week. A lot of things went on at the house, but I couldn't take a lot of pictures because: 1) it was raining heavily & 2) it's very dark inside. So why has it been stupid? Well, let's see... How about the A/C folks putting the outside unit right below the dryer vent. Sure! I want really hot air sucked into the A/C unit so it has to work harder to cool the air. It took several phone calls by Joe to the cabinet folks to get across the concept that the Master Bathroom counter-tops were not installed, nor were there any in the house. Guess what! Once again another pattern was discontinued (that's 2 counter-tops & 1 Nafco floor product). So back to the interior decorator we go to pick out another counter-top. He was booked solid on Friday, but was nice enough to lay out a few samples for the color coordination impaired (that's us). The problem was that he only gave us light colored samples and we planned on a darker counter-top. So off to the sample racks we went. Joe & I narrowed it down to three choices, one of which we were fairly certain was not good. The decorator agreed, but Joe & I couldn't on the remaining two. So, I got outvoted 2 to 1 on Joe's choice - no big deal since the selections were really that close.
In the meantime, I came home Thursday rather stressed and found one piece of mail - my Summons for Jury Duty. We all know that the probability of me actually ever sitting on a jury is virtually nil, but that does not consititute the "extreme hardship" necessary to get out of doing it. I'm gonna try using having to cancel my classes and the stress of dealing with moving into the new house & selling the old. Wish me luck!
Oh, and lest I forget! How
our builder inspires such confidence: We have the interest rate locked
until October 13th (paid to extend it an additional 30 days). According
to our lender, the final inspection must occur on the 11th for a closing
on the 13th. So Joe asks the builder, "Will the house be ready by
October 11th?" Response: "What if it's not?" Yeah, always
answer a question with another question...

Yes, to our surprise the vinyl windows & doors for the back porch
were installed. Good news: this should cut down on the insect
population of the house. Bad news: the vinyl was supposed to
be tinted.
Builder: "It doesn't say tinted in the contract." Us: "It doesn't say transparent either." C'mon, it's not like this guy didn't hear us say we wanted tinted or he doesn't live in Florida. Transparent vinyl gives us a 24x27 back porch that will be unusable for 5 months out of the year. We're waiting to hear back from the vinyl folks to see the panels can be changed. |

My darling children on the back porch where they won't be able to play
for 5 months out of the year.
Now don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like the view. I just don't like the view that my neighbors and other folks will have of my house (interior included). |

Common sense seems to be lacking lately. The area behind the wall is going to be a screened-in area. Does it make sense to have the door open into the middle of the area (swings to the right)? Didn't think so, but that's what our builder has done... |

Talk about transparent... |

Remember my comments about love bugs? This is a small section of the dining room floor. |

And a small section of the floor in the Den...
I think we can understand why the painters don't want to do a high-gloss paint job on the baseboards just yet. |
Well, things I couldn't take pictures of: More closet stuff done by Joe, the wall & floor tile (mostly) completed in all the bathrooms and the counter-tops completed in the kitchen, girls' bathroom and guest bathroom. The fun one is those wonderful plumbers we love so much. They're waiting for the tile guys to finish before they come back. The only problem is that they have to crack the slab & center the toilet drain in the Master Bathroom before the tile guys can finish in there. Gotta love those kooky plumbers... And now we also wait for the Master Bathroom counter-top and Nafco flooring (both on order).
We went over our allowance on lighting fixtures. Unlike the other suppliers, this one insisted that the overage be paid before delivery. Nice of them to call us at 4:45 PM on Friday to tell us this, as well as that if we don't pay the fixtures won't be delivered Monday as instructed by the builder. Luckily they took a credit card number over the phone.
And I thought I was stressed this past week. It's
going to get worse and I'm not looking forward to it.
